Looking down from the elevated box, the landing zone is framed beautifully by designer Jim Engh’s signature sinuous, snake-like bunkering. Needing a massive statement to start the round, I absolutely flushed the driver—sending the ball soaring down the mountain, carrying the distance, and driving the green to instantly calm my nerves and seize the momentum.

A fraction too much pace on a downhill putt won't just miss the cup; it will catch a ridge and run 15 feet off the putting surface entirely, keeping you on the absolute edge of your seat on every single hole.

It is a solid one-hour-plus drive north from the Coeur d'Alene area, but making the trip up is worth every mile, especially when you pair it with a full day of exploring the mountain-ringed shores of Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille.

  • Bring a Few Sleeves of Balls: "Bring a few sleeves" might actually be an understatement. This course is a beautiful hazard factory. Nicklaus brilliantly (and ruthlessly) utilized the natural wetlands, meaning almost every single hole forces you to carry over thick native grasses, deep marshes, or the winding channels of the Pack River. If you aren't hitting it straight, the local wildlife is going to inherit a lot of your golf balls.
